REFLEXOLOGY

Your Route To Professional Practice

Welcome to the world of reflexology

A fascinating therapy that offers numerous benefits for both practitioners and clients.

If you’re considering a career as a reflexologist, let us take you on a journey through the basis of this therapy and the invaluable benefits of receiving professional training.

Healing the body through massage of the feet and hands is an ancient art that dates back to a variety of cultures.
The earliest evidence of hand and foot massage was discovered in Egypt in the tomb of Ankhmahor at Saqqara. The tomb dates back to approximately 2330BC and is referred to as the ‘physician’s tomb’ due to all the medical pictures it contained.  One such picture is of people receiving hand and foot massages and the accompanying text reads ‘give strength’ and ‘do not cause pain’.
The ancient Chinese worked the hands and feet to help maintain good health and prevent disease as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  TCM believes that there are 12 invisible lines or meridians which run through our body which are the viaducts for our life energy.
As well as ancient Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Egyptian cultures foot and hand massage was also practiced by the Native American and African tribes.
Modern Times
In the 1890s Sir Henry Head, a neurologist, discovered that certain areas or zones of the skin reflected the health of certain internal organs and that if there was disease in an organ it was reflected as sensitivity or pain on the skin.  These specific zones were called ‘Head Zones’.
Although Head discovered the skin zones it was an American surgeon, William Fitzgerald that discovered zone therapy. Fitzgerald was an ear, nose and throat surgeon and found that he could perform simple surgeries by applying pressure to the fingers through pegs and elastic bands!
Fitzgerald lectured to other professionals about this extraordinary finding.  It was not well-received, but Shelby-Riley (a chiropractor) attended one of his lectures and was impressed and then went on to develop the therapy even more.
Eurice  Ingham, known as the mother of reflexology’ worked in Shelby-Riley’s clinic and further developed the techniques, finally creating the first foot maps.
Modern day reflexology is all based on Eunice Inghams foot charts.  She eventually opened up a school teaching her findings and Doreen Bailey attended the school and brought reflexology back to the UK in the 1960s.
